Harvard President Alan M. Garber sent a provocative letter to members of the university community on Monday, saying: “No government … should decide what private universities can teach, the people they can acknowledge and hire and the areas of learning and inquiry they can pursue.”
“In three-quarters of a century, the federal government has granted grants and contracts to Harvard and other universities to help pay for work, which, along with the investments in the university itself, has led to groundbreaking innovations in a variety of medical, engineering and science fields,” Garber wrote. “These innovations make our country and the world healthier and safer.
“In the past few weeks, the federal government has threatened with Several universitiesincluding Harvard, accused anti-Semitism on our campuses. These partnerships are the most productive and beneficial in U.S. history,” he continued.

Garber points to research conducted by the university, including life-changing advances, such as treatments for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and diabetes, as well as breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, quantum science, engineering and other fields.
The university president said the federal government not only retreated through partnerships with Harvard and other universities, but also risked the health and well-being of millions of individuals, but also risked the risk.

He encouraged the community to read the letter, noting that it required Harvard to “review” the views of student groups, faculty and staff, while also reducing the power of certain students, faculty and administrators due to ideological perspectives.
“We have informed the government through legal counsel that we will not accept the agreements they proposed,” Garber said. “Universities will not negotiate on their independence or constitutional rights. The government’s prescription is beyond the powers of the federal government. It violates Harvard’s First Amendment rights and beyond the legal limits of government powers in Chapter 6. It threatens our values as our private institutions, dedicated to the pursuit, production and knowledge.
He added: “No government – no government ruling parties can decide what private universities can teach, who they can acknowledge and hire, and what areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”

Garber said the university has made it clear that being prone to fighting anti-Semitism does not bear moral obligations.
He said that over the past 15 months, the university has taken many steps to address Harvard’s anti-Semitism and plans to do more.
For example, he said the university will continue to foster a thriving culture of open inquiries on campus and expand the diversity of knowledge and perspectives within the community.
He also said that the university will respect freedom of speech and objections while ensuring protests occur at the time, location and manner that do not interfere with teaching, learning and research.
Finally, he said Harvard will work together to find ways that are consistent with the law to promote and support a vibrant community to example, respect and embrace the differences.
