Florida’s largest Venezuelan stronghold poised to join forces with ICE: report

City Doral, FloridaA key hub for Venezuelan immigration is expected to reach an agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which will enable the city’s law enforcement agencies to conduct some immigration enforcement actions.

Under a person suspected of violating federal immigration laws, Dora City Council members are expected to authorize a partnership with ICE through the 287(g) program on Wednesday, which will enable doral police to enforce limited immigration enforcement such as litigation, challenge and deal with people suspected of violating federal immigration laws. Doral was incorporated into this work, a seemingly surprising twist, and the city is home to one of the largest Venezuelan immigrant populations in the country. This fact has attracted much attention from the local population, most notably the underlying racial profile, despite city officials trying to ease fear and said the partnership will focus strictly on legal enforcement.

“The goal is not to detain anyone based on their appearance,” Council member Rafael Pineyro told the Miami Herald. “We are obliged to comply with federal and state laws, but the goal is not to target individuals based on appearance. Our focus remains on legal enforcement, not analysis.”

Part of the plan focuses on identifying and handling illegal immigrants who have been detained and eligible for deportation. Another section allows local law enforcement to support ice deportation operations in the field.

The program allows some local law enforcement officers to attend a 40-hour ice training course, while also requiring local agencies to keep in touch with the ICE regularly while doing ICE Immigration law enforcement.

Doral is involved in the program as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis encourages local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The report notes that Florida law requires law enforcement agencies to be responsible for the county jail’s 287 (g) program.

Local activists continue to oppose potential agreements.

“By turning local law enforcement into a tool for the Department of Homeland Security enforcement, Doral’s elected officials broke the trust of the city’s large Venezuelan community,” Adelys Ferro, executive director of the Venezuela U.S. Caucus, told the Miami Herald. “Communities rely on police for protection, not persecution.”
