Programming Alerts: Senator Maggie Hassan, who watched Monday, April 14, discuss the topic.
The Trump administration recently released an intelligence report announcing Illegal fentanyl One of the biggest threats to our safety. I agree. That’s why I’m shocked that the Trump administration is expected to ignore its own reports and hand over one of our most powerful weapons in the fight against fentanyl: Medicaid.
My country, New Hampshire and our communities across the country, have been hit hard Fentanyl Crisis. Despite my many strong disagreements with President Trump, we were able to come together during his first term to follow fentanyl traffickers. We have developed a multi-pronged strategy that includes strengthening border security to stifle drug movements, providing local law enforcement with the tools they need to protect our communities, and making treatment more accessible to more people struggling with addiction.
The last part is especially important because the more people enter and stay rehabilitated, the lower the need for fentanyl is. What many people may not realize is that it is available every day in the country Addiction treatment Thanks to Medicaid coverage, especially those provided under the so-called Medicaid extension. Before Medicaid expansion, many people with addiction were unable to obtain health insurance, let alone addiction treatment. But today they can. However, President Trump and Congressional Republicans plan to cut Medicaid and expansion of gut Medicaid to pay tax giveaways and pay special interests to billionaires and businesses. This will make it difficult for people to receive treatment and receive treatment and will only strengthen the drug cartel.
When I was Governor of New Hampshire, law enforcement was a major proponent of our efforts to strengthen Medicaid because they knew first-hand that people were recovering — often thanks to accessing drug-assisted treatments due to addiction, which is a key way to reduce the need for deadly drugs.
One of my roles in the Senate is to serve as a ranking member of the Joint Economic Commission, A new report was released recently The importance of Medicaid in the fight against addiction and fentanyl is detailed. Our analysis found that about 1 million people nationwide receive drug-assisted treatment through Medicaid. And this treatment is working: The latest data available suggests that the nationwide overdose deaths fell by about 25% compared to 2023, the biggest drop in years. We finally identified the most effective strategy in the fight against fentanyl, and finally, a trace of light was seen in this terrifying dark tunnel.

But President Trump and his allies in Congress are ready to cancel the progress by covering up Medicaid’s budget to pay more tax giveaways. The program will effectively end Medicaid as we know it and keep millions of Americans from affording health care. This will prevent many people who struggle with addiction from getting the help they need. Finally, losing this essential tool in the fight against fentanyl will make Law enforcement work Even harder, we are back to the bipartisan progress we have made and put more Americans in a spiral of addiction and despair.

Fighting fentanyl should not be a partisan issue. The fentanyl crisis hit the red and blue countries and suffered devastating families with various political stripes. The most important job of the government is to keep people safe – that’s why I’m always willing to stand up on the party line and with any political party to keep the Bureau of Statistics and Americans safe in Granite. I have taken extreme voices on both sides to strengthen law enforcement and as governor, I have helped hire more police officers to keep our communities safe. I also support bipartisan efforts to protect our borders, my trip to the northern and southern borders informed, and my conversations with Border Patrol and law enforcement officers.
Some of my Republican colleagues expressed concern about the efforts of the president and the Republican Congressional leadership, and I know that many Americans who support the president, including the president of New Hampshire, share these concerns and hope the president will reverse the line. There is no surrender in the fight against fentanyl – when thousands of us Americans still die every year from overdose, rather than a country as big as ours, never. It’s time to put politics aside, listen to law enforcement and government’s own intelligence reports, jointly defend Medicaid so that we can protect our children, prevent fentanyl trafficking, and make more Americans addicted on the road to recovery.
