In response to an executive order, President Donald Trump’s team will provide him with plans to develop a golden dome, Missile Defense Shield Designed to prevent attacks that are increasingly difficult to defeat. This effort will require innovative thinking, collective will and quick action.

Since my tenure as director Missile Defense Agency In the early 2000s, a sensor integration network based on space, land and sea paired with ground interceptors effectively blocked attacks on our homelands on Iran, North Korea and others. But as they continue to improve their capabilities, we need to build the next generation of missile defenses as we look at a revived Russia and radical China.

The windows of the ballistic missile heading to the U.S. target are less than 40 minutes, and may be as short as 10 or 15 minutes if launched from a submarine close to the target. Ability to intercept warheads on a large number of warheads has a significant deterrent to the attacker, saving millions of lives and U.S. infrastructure

Laser, space radar, missile interceptor: Defense leader develops vision for Trump’s “Golden Dome” project

Our existing missile defense systems cannot easily defeat some of our opponents’ more modern, more refined weapons. Eliminating these threats will require getting rid of the status quo and the development of the Golden Dome, the next-generation missile shield.

The Golden Dome Initiative is built on past projects, including President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative There are also brilliant pebbles, which propose the deployment of lightweight spacecraft to intercept and destroy Soviet missiles. Technical and financial constraints led to the demise of these early efforts.

With current technologies, including advances in artificial intelligence, satellite manufacturing and point-to-point networks, a space-based missile defense layer is now feasible to deploy, which is able to track and intercept ballistic missiles in its lift/rise and midway orbits. This will fill a critical gap in our current missile defense system, destroy ballistic missiles earlier, and prevent catastrophic loss of life.

We can do this – we have to.

Imagine that through a powerful space point-to-point communication network, thousands of satellites form thousands of satellites. Each satellite has the knowledge of all other satellites, both as threat sensors and as interceptors to kill killers. In fact, the concept of network has proved its effectiveness on the Ukrainian battlefield.

Shortly after the Russian invasion, Ukrainian troops designed a system based on Uber’s point-to-point ride network. Their software, known as GIS ARTA, uses algorithms to determine which artillery or missile devices are best suited to deal with each threat. The constellations of satellites can operate on the same principle, causing the most effective satellite swarms in the constellations to flock and become impact vehicles.

We already know that it has taken many years to similar systems to this, but the technology was not developed until recently to enable the implementation of the sub-orbital system of swarm interception that is within our scope.

My colleagues at Booz Allen and I began briefing policy makers on the actual implementation of this system last summer and strengthening our conversation after the election. We are pleased to consider this concept a policy priority for the days after Trump took office.

It is important to understand that there is no shield or system that can defeat every missile our opponents fire. But now, in the words of Reagan and Trump, there is now the ability and ability to defeat single bombs and multiple missile launches, creating strategic deterrence – or “peace through power.” We must force our opponents to consider the possibility of successful defense and subsequent retaliatory strikes.

Building such a satellite constellation requires significant investment, but it provides corresponding rewards at a lower overall cost than the current system. Estimates show that we can create and deploy up to 2,000 linked satellite interceptors (approximately the same or less) at a price similar to developing and deploying one element of today’s systems – 44 ground-based interceptors currently installed in Alaska and California and related global radars.

SpaceX’s Starlink alone estimates that 7,000 small satellites are currently in low-Earth orbit and are potential models for deployment. For the defense system, which is accused of maintaining countless lives and trillions of dollars in assets, which would be the money spent.

The Golden Dome will require many companies and bold new partnerships. The Department of Defense must act quickly to appoint a work, preferably by actually deploying an integrated missile defense system and shooting down past uncooperative space satellites, such as missile defense agencies.

The faster Congress speeds up the appointees to confirm senior defense positions to lead this effort, the better. Congress will need to fully fund the vision of the Golden Dome.

We cannot let unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles stifle our progress. We need to break down traditional silos around technical requirements, acquisition processes and budget authorizations, putting them under a team to quickly decide to drive development and field battles.

The Golden Dome Project represents the best creativity in the United States and also an ambitious, extraordinary opportunity to consolidate our position as a major military force on the planet and above. We must do anything to impose this protection network on our homes.

As China’s artificial intelligence capabilities continue to grow, they can almost certainly consider how these recent innovations can be deployed to defend their continent. Just like in the competition between the world, being the first to develop artificial general intelligence and the first to deploy a truly effective national missile defense system, can ensure the excellence of a country, while the rest of the world catches up. The golden dome must be built first; the alternative is horrible.
