Google Maps Timeline Data Was Lost for Some People. Here's How to Restore It

Google has inadvertently confirmed that it has deleted some Google Maps timeline data that belongs to many people. The company told CNET that the incident was caused by temporary technical issues, but did not give details in detail. The issue has since been resolved and new access should now appear in the user schedule.

“We briefly encountered a technical issue that led to some people deleting timeline data,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “Almost everyone with an encrypted timeline backup will be able to recover their data; unfortunately, those who do not enable backup will not be able to recover lost data.”

The company said people need to use the latest version of Google Maps to restore data from backups. To import your data, go to the Timeline section, click the cloud icon near the top of the screen, and select a backup. The event is Report first Authoritative by technical publication Android.

Google Maps TimelineBy default, it is turned off to help Google users remember where and where they visited. Data is usually stored in your Google account, which is part of their activity in other Google sites, applications, and services.

This is not the only time Google has encountered a timeline data problem. Previously, it faced the challenge of retrieving data from certain users after it converted from cloud-based storage to device storage to make functionality more secure.
