this State Department and FBI Los Angeles Warn spring break travelers to take certain precautions and stay alert when traveling.
FBI Los Angeles tells travelers Check the State Department’s travel advice (designated to provide our citizens with reliable information about overseas security threats) to book destinations in advance.
“Whether it’s families looking to escape the last wave of winter or college students seeking a brief breath from their grim academic life, the risks are aware of the risks,” FBI assistant director Akil Davis said in a statement Tuesday. “Keep alert throughout the trip and be prepared to contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.”
The warning comes after the disappearance of University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki on March 6 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Konanki, 20, is still missing As of Tuesday, her resort disappeared after swimming at around 4 a.m. at 4 a.m., sparking international headlines.

The FBI lists the following tips so travelers can stay safe during spring break:
- Create a point of contact for your family in an emergency.
- Avoid traveling alone, especially after dark. Be careful about your surroundings and avoid what you think might put your personal safety at risk.
- Use only authorized taxis/shuttle buses. Passengers have been robbed or kidnapped while using a taxi.
- Avoid taking illegal, improper or indiscreet actions. Avoid providing sexual companionship; they may lead to room raids, photography, and ransomware.
- Escape criminals by being aware of the surroundings and warning about the possibility of surveillance. Please take down the psychological notes of anyone who is following you and report them to the appropriate security officer immediately.
- Beware of new acquaintances who explore information about you or try to get you involved in situations that may become compromises.

In the Caribbean, The country with the highest travel consultation is Haiti, which has a Level 4 travel consultation, which means “don’t travel”, followed by Level 3 Jamaica, which means that American citizens should “rethink travel.”

Various other Caribbean countries are under Level 2 warnings, which means Americans should take more precautions. These countries include the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, Cuba and the Netherlands Antal.
Several Mexico states also have Level 4 warnings due to dangerous cartels and gang activities, including Sinora, Tamaulipas, Zachatkas, Mimoca, Colima and Guerrero.
