The manufacturer of Zapzyt acne treatment gel also agreed to voluntarily recall the product because of increased levels of benzene found in its own tests, the FDA said.

The FDA explained that 90% of the 95 benzoyl benzoyl dioxide tested products are “undetectable or extremely low benzene.”

The agency said benzene is a “chemical substance used to produce a variety of industrial products, including chemicals, dyes, detergents and some plastics.”

While it is safe to use benzoyl peroxide in acne products, a small amount of benzene contamination over a long period of time “can reduce blood cell formation. Long-term use of inhalation, oral intake, oral intake, and skin absorption can lead to cancers such as leukemia and other blood diseases.”

The FDA said it began independent testing of benzoyl peroxide products after third-party test results “caused concerns about elevated benzene levels in certain acne products.”

“FDA test results show that benzene contaminated products are less than third-party discoveries,” the agency added.

“This means retailers are instructed to remove products from store shelves and online markets, but have not explicitly directed consumers to take action on products they currently have,” the FDA said. “Even for decades of use of these products, the risk of people suffering from cancer due to benzylene found in these products is low.”
